چکیده

Nickel films (several-micrometer thickness, with 5.2-mm square holes in a square lattice array with 12.7-mm hole-to-hole spacing) exhibit Ebbesen’s extraordinary transmission effect in the infrared; that is, they transmit a higher fraction of incident infrared light than the fractional open area of the holes. The role of surface plasmons (SPs) in this phenomenon is much debated, so we have obtained a data set whereby this idea and others can be tested against empirically determined dispersion curves. Unpolarized, zero-order transmission spectra have been recorded by rotating the mesh (from j2to 60in 1steps) relative to the spectrometer’s incident beam about an axis along the mesh’s nearest hole-to-hole spacing in order to create the dispersion diagram. The data are numerically analyzed for peak centers that are then projected outside of the light line (by SP momentum matching equations) to two SP dispersion curves that are spaced in frequency by a splitting. With this caveat, all of the observed structure is accounted for by a simple SP model.

Modifying an Infrared Microscope To Characterize Propagating Surface Plasmon Polariton-Mediated Resonances

Wehave been developing techniques to apply propagating surface plasmon polariton (SPP) resonances to the spectroscopic study of individual, subwavelength-sized particles. SPPs, mixed states of light and conducting electrons at the surface of a patterned metal surface, are part of, that is, mediate, the extraordinary transmission/reflection resonances of patterned metal meshes. A fair body of wo...

Developing Plasmonics Under the Infrared Microscope: From Ni Nanoparticle Arrays to Infrared Micromesh.

Microscopes typically collect light over large ranges of angles dispersing plasmonic resonances. While this is an advantage for recording spectra of microscopic particles, it is a disadvantage for sensing by resonance shifts. Adaptations are described herein which enable one to identify, manipulate, and examine narrow plasmonic resonances under a microscope. Noting more general familiarity with...

Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Bi2O3 Loaded on the MCM-41 and Study of Its Photocatalytic Performance in Degradation of Methylene Blue

In this work, we report synthesis and characterization of Bi2O3 nanoparticles loaded on mesoporous MCM-41 nanoparticles by a simple solid-state dispersion (SSD) method. Monoclinic bismuth oxide nanoparticles were prepared by polyacrylamide gel method and used as loading materials on the prepared mesoporous MCM-41 as a supporting material. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray p...

Infrared Plasmonic Transmission Resonances of Gold Film with Hexagonally Ordered Hole Arrays on ZnSe Substrate

The high fractional open area of metal thin film coatings, with two dimensional, hexagonally ordered, close packed arrays of holes, makes them of interest for the incorporation of plasmonic effects into a variety of optical devices. Gold films with hexagonal patterns of circular holes have been created on ZnSe infrared windows. The films have 2.50 μm diameter holes and a hexagonal lattice param...
